Michael Vick’s Shot at Redemption

Michael Vick was my favorite non Patriots and Browns (yes they are my second favorite team..long story) player. He was like Barry Sanders at the QB position. He had amazing runs that left defenders grasping at the air. He was the face, heart, and soul of the Atlanta Falcons. He was the next superstar in the NFL.

I can remember the first time I ever saw Vick play. This was in 2001 against the Patriots. Having been a rookie at the time, the New England defense basically swallowed him, but Vick quickly progressed and developed. In 2002, I saw him once again, this time versus the Seahawks. Vick won his team the game.

Soon after, Vick shocked the football world with a post-season win in Green Bay against the Packers. I loved the way he looked on the field and bought jerseys, bobble heads, and every other piece of Vick memorabilia out there.

I followed his career; he continued his amazing runs while polishing his throwing skills. In 2005, he led the Falcons to NFC Championship game against the Philadelphia Eagles (ironically enough the team that he is now a member of). The sky was limit for him. He broke the QB rushing record in 2006. Then his world, career, and reputation became tainted forever.

Vick was charged with endorsing dog fights. He was the facilitator here, having trained them, bet on them, and was directly responsible for the injuries and deaths of many dogs. I couldn’t believe he’d do something like this. Whether he was influenced by the wrong people or not, anyone in their right mind obviously knew what kind of behavior this was. I was disgusted.

Two years later, Vick is back and the league is willing to give him a clean slate. Having signed with the Eagles, it looks like he has a genuine chance to redeem himself. He deserves this second chance, but I’m still not ready to forgive him.

What kind of baffles my mind is looking at players like Donte Stallworth. Stallworth was responsible for hitting and killing a man with his car while driving drunk, and Stallworth is getting far last time than Vick did (just four weeks of time). I feel that both actions are unforgivable, but can’t believe Stallworth is getting off more lightly than Vick.

While both men made huge mistakes, it seems like all of the attention is on Vick. Stallworth will surely be given a second chance as well, and I can only say that they both make the most of these chances.

Book dealers claim that Oxfam is the “Tesco of the second hand book market” and that the unfair competition from Oxfam is responsible for the closure of many seconds hand book shops in recent years.

Oxfam opened its first bookshop in 1987 and now has 121 bookshops in different parts of the UK. Oxfam has sold over 19 million pounds worth of books in the last year, and is currently the largest retailer of second hand books in Europe.

Book Dealers are arguing that Oxfam is able to compete unfairly in the marketplace due to there charitable status, they get free staffing from volunteers , they do not have to pay for stock and they get an 80% reduction on business rates.

Oxfam have responded by stating that there are many other factors currently affecting the viability of second hand book sellers, such as the fall in new book prices due to big retailers, and the ability to buy second hand books online.
